My Story

How I Got Started

I first discovered digital marketing when I was 16 years old. I remember sitting at home and googling “How to make money online” Keep in mind this was in 2014 and at the time online resources were a lot more scarce. My first introduction to the space was a sketchy guy teaching people how to do affiliate marketing through Clickbank. I can’t remember his name, just that he ended up getting in trouble for fraud at some point later in his career. I suppose it was a good thing that I wasn’t yet old enough to sign up as a Clickbank affiliate. Even though I wasn’t applying my knowledge I spent many nights in high school filling up notebooks learning about Facebook ads, and email marketing, and trying to wrap my head around SEO. Although I wasn’t rolling in dough I was beginning to build a foundation that would carry me throughout my career future.

When I turned 18 I decided to take a year off before starting university and attempt to build my own digital marketing agency. I promised my mom I’d give it one year and if I wasn’t able to make a full-time income I’d go back to school. I was able to work with a couple of small businesses to build simple websites and manage their Instagrams but as an 18-year-old, fresh out of high school, my biggest flaw was not being able to convince business owners I was the right person to help them grow their business, even despite my passion for the industry.

During university, I spent my spare time attempting to drop-ship products and build eCommerce stores. Like any good marketing and entrepreneurship student, I had plenty of little failed projects. Thank goodness for those projects too, because by the time I graduated had not only a strong foundation of practical knowledge to go alongside all the theory I learned in university.
